MITO Walnut Project
About the project
This project focuses on strengthening the walnut value chain in Jumla, a region known for its high-quality walnuts. 4S/Jumla works closely with local farmers to improve production techniques, post-harvest handling, and marketing strategies. By promoting better orchard management, introducing modern tools, and linking farmers to markets, the project increases productivity and income for hundreds of rural households. Governance support is also provided to build farmer cooperatives and ensure collective bargaining power. The project is ongoing, and its long-term vision is to make Jumla a leading hub for walnut production in Nepal while empowering communities through sustainable agricultural practices.
The MITO Walnut Project, launched in partnership with Helvetas Nepal, is transforming walnut farming into a profitable venture for Jumla’s rural households. The project works across eight local levels to strengthen the walnut value chain by improving production technologies, enhancing governance, and building sustainable market linkages. Farmers are trained in orchard management, post-harvest handling, and marketing skills to boost both quality and income. By creating better access to markets, the initiative empowers smallholders, particularly women and marginalized farmers, to benefit from one of Jumla’s most valuable natural products. The project not only uplifts livelihoods but also contributes to environmental sustainability through improved cultivation practices.
